Introduction: The W-2 Arrival It is January 30th. In mailboxes across America, W-2 forms are arriving. For the average American, tax season is a headache. For the low-income immigrant family, tax season is a lifeline. The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child Tax Credit are often the largest single sums of money a family will see all year. It is not “extra” money; it is the money for a used car so they don’t have to take three buses to work. It is the deposit for a safer apartment.
The ITIN Key Many of the people we serve do not yet have Social Security Numbers. Does that mean they don’t pay taxes? Myth: “Undocumented immigrants don’t pay taxes.” Fact: They pay billions. We help our clients apply for an ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number).
- Why it matters: Filing taxes builds a paper trail of “Good Moral Character.” It shows a judge that you are contributing to society. It is a critical piece of evidence for future legal relief.
The Predator Problem This weekend, “Tax Prep” pop-up shops are appearing in immigrant neighborhoods. Many are predatory—charging $400 or $500 to file a simple return, or promising “instant refunds” that are actually high-interest loans.
- ELOIM’s Role: We connect our community to VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) sites. We teach them that they should not have to pay to access their own money. We protect them from scams that could steal their identity or their refund.
Conclusion: Economic Justice Accessing the tax code is a form of economic justice. It is ensuring that the people who clean the floors, cook the food, and build the roads get the credits they are legally entitled to. This February, we are focused on financial empowerment—turning a tax refund into a stepping stone for stability.
