Addiction is often a disease of isolation, where individuals lose their connection to their community, their family, and their own sense of worth. At ELOI Ministries Inc. (USA), we believe that the final and most crucial step of recovery is the restoration of purpose. Our Post-Recovery Support program is designed for young people who have completed initial treatment and are looking for a way to rebuild their lives on a foundation of service and global perspective.
We facilitate self-sponsored trips to Uganda, ranging from three months to over a year, where these young people become active participants in our community projects. This is not a “tour”; it is a transformation. By moving away from the environment where their addiction flourished, they find a clean slate. The impact of this program is profound:
- Perspective Shift: When a young person in recovery works side-by-side with orphans or helps build a classroom for the ELOI Junior School, their own problems begin to take on a new context. They see their own resilience mirrored in the strength of the Ugandan people.
- Skill Application: Recovery is bolstered by productivity. Whether they are helping with administrative tasks, teaching sports, or assisting in agricultural projects, they are proving to themselves that they are capable, reliable, and valuable.
- Cultural Immersion: Living in our gated compound in Ntinda allows for deep cultural exchange. They learn the values of “Ubuntu”—that we are who we are through our relationships with others.
- Sustainable Sobriety: This extended period of service provides the time needed for the brain to heal and for new, positive habits to take root. They return to the USA not just as “sober,” but as global citizens with a mission.
We have seen that when a person finds a reason to live that is bigger than themselves, they find the strength to stay healthy. This program is a testament to our belief that healing is a journey that spans oceans and changes hearts.
