Great question! yas! welcomes youth participants aged 15-20 to join our group as youth advocates in service. Youth 16+ do not need to be currently enrolled in school to participate. Students must submit an application in order to be considered to join the group. We welcome students with a passion for learning, those who wish to contribute to society in some way, and those who would like to share their voices with others in a respectful space.
Not at all! We are here to help you find your voice, in your way, in your time. We will help you to develop skills of communication and if you wish- leadership. We will all work together collaboratively to explore topics in human rights and community connection.
Our participants meet virtually or in person (depending on the group dynamics) twice a week to discuss topics, connect, and participate in curriculum and planning. Participants commit to one of the two weekly sessions that are offered to be considered active participants. In addition, participants design and attend an agreed upon amount of service opportunities in each session. Service opportunities can be creative- such as publishing an article, holding a town forum, creating public awareness through art, and many other options. Our team will work with youth so that their voices are heard in their own unique way. Every youth is different, and every group will work differently together. We thrive and support individual expression and team collaboration in our sessions. Participants will experience expert guest speakers, speakers from their communities and regions, speakers from ELOI Ministries and many other opportunities for learning and exploration based on their current topic.
Passion. Plain and simple. Upon acceptance into the program our Youth Advisors will be trained in our ELOI discussion ABC’s, facilitation, and human rights courses prior to engaging with youth. All adult volunteers and of age youth must complete a background check in our volunteer management system and be cleared by ELOI staff to participate in programming.
All youth who have actively participated in at least 2 quarters of yas! are eligible to apply for a service learning opportunity with our sister site in Uganda East Africa. Youth will be guided in creating their own service learning experience with Uganda staff and volunteers. Our team will assist youth with fundraising and organization of the trip. This is an amazing opportunity to travel abroad, learn a new culture, and help those who are seeking justice, hope, and dignity.
Adults: Approved Youth Advisors or approved adult community volunteers may escort our youth on their journeys to Africa after receiving appropriate training and preparation.
